Below-Grade Work at Nordic Condos Advances with Second Crane | UrbanToronto
Medium and high-density residential development is a relatively new phenomenon in the blocks surrounding Wilson subway station in North York, one of the latest nodes of intensification in Toronto. One of the biggest players in the community is Collecdev, living up to its branding with a growing collection of developments in the area, the latest being Nordic Condos. Construction of this gh3-designed complex is now well underway a few hundred metres east of Wilson station.

Work at the site commenced about a year ago with the start of demolition of a four-storey commercial building at 530 Wilson Avenue and a pair of four-storey rental apartment buildings at 470 and 490 Wilson. Site clearance—conducted alongside early drilling for the site’s geothermal energy system—continued late into 2020, following by shoring and excavation into early 2021. The site reached an important construction milestone in mid-April, when the first tower crane was erected at the base of the 9.9-metre-deep pit.
When we last checked in on the site in mid-June, the first crane was working away on the first walls and columns of the two-level underground garage’s P2 level at the east end of the pit. Work has since advanced to the P1 level, its first floor forms and rebar cages now visible at the east edge of the site.

Towards the centre of the pit, preparations were being made for the installation of a second crane, with a concrete pad and steel crane base installed by that time. In the weeks since, the second crane has been installed, allowing forming activity to advance at the interior of the site.

At the far west end of the pit, the last remaining excavation work has removed a soil ramp previously used by crews and equipment to access the base of the pit. A third tower crane will be installed in this area of the site in the coming weeks.

Nordic’s buildings will each rise 12 storeys, topping off at 41 metres hugh over Wilson Avenue. The complex will bring 429 condominium units to the area, while also replacing the 160 rental units from demolished buildings with new rental suites.
