Big Love For The George Street Diner Near St. Lawrence Market
With over 1,000 Google reviews and a rating of 4.5, it’s no surprise that the George Street Diner is a local favourite! Today I got a chance to chat with owner Ash Farrelly, who you can tell is passionate about her diner, her team, and the delicious food she serves.
Handsomely situated with its bright-red painted-brick exterior at the corner of George Street and Richmond Street East, the George Street Diner is a genuine original-character diner that’s been part of our city’s history and day-to-day fabric seemingly forever.

What is it about classic diners that seem to exude the ‘comfort’ in comfort food? Even with COVID-19 lingering in our memories, there is still a sense of communal dining here; the counter is lined with brightly coloured stools (all safely spaced out as per the provinces’ current guidelines), as well as a row of cozy booths along the windows that include glass partitions in between to keep diners safe, yet comfortable. The open kitchen emits the sounds and aromas of cooks busily preparing hearty and happy fare.

If you are looking for a new brunch spot, this one should be top of your list. One of the staples here is the owner’s famous soda bread, lovingly called Farrelly’s Famous Irish Soda Bread, which is filling and flavourful. Ash explains that soda bread is an Irish traditional bread that quickly rises in the oven thanks to the combination of soda and yeast.
Their menu absolutely looks appetizing, but in Ash’s opinion, it’s their Irish breakfast that you must try when you go visit their diner! Why? Because it includes all the essentials, such as: sausage, ham, bacon, eggs, fresh-baked Farrelly’s bread, fries, beans, seared tomato, sautéed onions, and mushrooms. Yum!
This diner also features organic, local ingredients that add to the high quality of their diner fare. Even their coffee is fairtrade! When I asked Ash what makes her diner so special, she was quick to reply – with lots of pride – that all her food is homemade: from the bread to roasting their own chicken and ham! Ash even goes to the food terminal regularly to handpick her produce.
Urbaneer Fun fact: Did you know that the George Street Diner is also a hot spot for several movie productions, such as the 2013 film “What If” starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan (the diner even made it onto the movie’s poster, as seen above), and it also appeared in TV shows like The Boys, Suits, and American Gods.

Recently, a scene from the movie “Die In The Gun Fight”, starring Diego Boneta and Alexandra Daddario was also shot there. In 2014, Shawn Mendes filmed his popular music video “Life of the Party”…which is exactly what the George Street Diner is!
