Eighty One Wellesley Rising East of Church Street | UrbanToronto
Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village community is getting a new high-rise addition, as construction presses on just east of Church Street at the site of Aragon’s Eighty One Wellesley. Construction work for the new Core Architects-designed condominium tower has been ongoing since the end of 2017, and approximately three and a half years into the job, the project is now making substantial progress towards its final count of 28 storeys.

Site preparation and shoring activity progressed through mid-2018, paving the way for an excavation that would bottom out in the early months of 2019. A tower crane followed approximately two years ago, though forming of the underground levels took another year, reaching the surface in April, 2020. That year brought on its own set of challenges with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and when we last checked in on the project in October, forming was ongoing for the seventh and final floor of the podium.
With the podium levels complete, forming of the repeating tower floor-plates above has proceeded at a much faster rate. The tower has now become prominent above the podium, where crews are now forming the 16th and 17th floors. At the current rate of forming, the building should top out at its final height of 97.5 metres later this year.

As forming stretches the tower skyward up top, cladding installation has started on lower floors. The podium levels are being enclosed in a window wall system with large vision glass panels framed in dark aluminum, while balconies on podium levels are to be screened in by a brick-clad lattice, for which weatherproof backing is now in place. At the same time, the laying of bricks has begun on the west wall of the podium.

At ground level, white precast panels have been applied. Above the podium levels, the brick will give way to more of this precast.

The building is bringing 179 condominium units to the neighbourhood, joining a wave of development in one of the country’s most vibrant cultural communities.
