Friendly Vibes At Local Public Eatery In Liberty Village
If you call Liberty Village home, you know that this dynamic area has been flourishing not only in terms of residential real estate but with new shops and eateries popping up in the area, giving it a cool neighbourhood vibe.
One of the most popular (and we concur!) spots is Local Public Eatery located at the corner of East Liberty Street and Hanna Avenue, in the former ‘Origin Liberty’ space.

During life outside of lockdown, this welcoming space offers 120 seats to sit and savour onsite. In our current environment, curbside pickup and delivery are the name of the game, and Local Public Eatery has pivoted to provide a great menu that you can sample at home. They also offer a corner store menu, including things like a Nacho kit, a Fried Chicken Ramen kit and DIY drink kits.
And really, these days, what could be more welcome than comfort food in the comfort of your home?
Local Public Eatery is actually the eastern outpost of a Vancouver-based restaurant chain. One might think that in Toronto foodie culture, what seems to be a “big-box” restaurant would not have much of a chance, but with any establishment the recipe for success is simple – tasty food, attentive service and an engaging atmosphere – and now a takeout menu that replicates the in-house dining experience. Local Public Eatery checks all these boxes, in our opinion.
Perfect for when you feel like this:
Remember before COVID-19 entered our collective consciousness, when dining out was a natural accompaniment to a little retail therapy (and you actually strolled inside a storefront to look at goods being offered for sale)? My friend and I were recently sauntering through Liberty Village, and when we found ourselves in need of mid-day sustenance, we popped over to the Local. The place buzzing with a lunchtime crowd.
In fact, it was hopping.
(Have you seen the patio? It’s a perfect breezy hang out in nice weather!)
Despite the line up at the door, the staff was quickly able to accommodate us. The space fits right in with the industrial character of the hood with a large bar in the centre of the room surrounded with metal bar stools, with re-finished wood tables and comfy booths lining the walls. Much like a laid-back rec room, there are large screen TVs for the sports fans, while a split-flat display board (much like in a train station) advertises current brews on the seven rotating taps and updates the list each time a keg sells out! How neat is that? And for those that prefer something a little stronger, at least two kinds of whiskey are served from tap.
A bit early for taps and kegs, we chose the crispy chicken sandwich served on a Portuguese bun with coleslaw and BBQ mustard sauce, with a generous side of thin, crispy fries. Yummmmm!! We love that although this spot offers pub-favourites like hamburgers and fish n’ chips, there are also healthier options like a variety of well-crafted salads as well as small share plates.
This was a great experience.
It’s easy to see why this eatery is a popular spot in the neighbourhood. The friendly vibe, laid back atmosphere, and the delicious comfort food is all reflective of the name – “Local”. Definitely, a great place to meet up with old friends and make new ones, too!
