Podium Taking Shape at Theatre District Residence and RIU Plaza Hotel | UrbanToronto
Two more towers are about to rise into Toronto’s increasingly dense Entertainment District skyline, as construction continues at the Adelaide and Widmer streets site of Plaza’s Theatre District Residence and RIU Plaza Hotel. The mixed-use complex’s pair of BDP Quadrangle-designed 48 and 49-storey towers will soon ascend above the intersection, bringing new condominiums as well as the first Canadian location of RIU Plaza Hotels to the area.
We’ve been keeping an eye on progress since work began just over two years ago when shoring rigs began drilling around the perimeter of the cleared site. We last checked in on construction in late January, when work had risen above grade to form the majority of the ground floor and the first parts of the 2nd floor, hidden from view of passersby. In the three months since, work has continued on the complex’s podium floors.

The view above, captured in mid-April, shows that portions of the third floor have since taken shape, with slab forms in place above for the initial section of the fourth floor slab to be poured in the near future. The progress on this northeast corner of the north tower has been rapid since the start of April. Below, an April 5th shot captured from the Commodore Building to the west shows a wider view of the podium’s third-floor slab in progress. The rebar cage visible at the centre-left marks the beginnings of the progress now being seen at the east end of the site’s Adelaide frontage.

Theatre District’s 49-storey south tower is to be entirely filled with condominiums, with 424 units. The 48-storey north tower—marketed as Encore at Theatre District—will have 131 condo units on the 25 upper floors while the 353-room RIU Plaza Hotel takes up its first 23 floors. Despite the slight variation in floor count, both towers are set to reach shared heights of just over 156 metres, with the extra floor partially attributed to an extra-height floor above the hotel component, containing a transfer slab that will structurally address the change to condo suites above.
