Throwback Thursday: Five Years of Bayside Growth | UrbanToronto
This week’s Throwback Thursday turns the clocks back on Toronto’s East Bayfront area, where former brownfield sites are gradually being built out into a new community along the east end of the harbour. We look back five years to January, 2016, for an east-facing view along the granite-paved Water’s Edge Promenade. To the left, the 2016 view showed early above-grade forming progress for Aqualina at Bayside, while to its immediate east, shoring had begun for Aquavista at Bayside.

Fast forward over five years to March, 2021, and both Aqualina and Aquavista are complete, as new buildings enter the mix further to the east. While obscured by the promenade’s row of trees, the outline of Aquabella at Bayside is now visible. Even further to the east and not quite visible in this photo, the early stages of construction are advancing at the site of the last of the Aqua siblings, Aqualuna at Bayside. In the background, the Lower Don Lands redevelopment project has added more land at the west end of the Keating Channel, while further to the south, a new naturalized river valley and mouth is being excavated for the Don River.

We will return in a few weeks with another look at the changing face of Toronto. In the meantime, you can submit your own Throwback Thursday comparisons in our dedicated Forum thread for your chance to be featured in next week’s edition.
