Throwback Thursday: PANAMANIA at Nathan Phillips Square | UrbanToronto
This week’s Throwback Thursday takes us back six years, to when Toronto was celebrating the start of the 2015 Pan American Games. In July, 2015, Nathan Phillips Square and other Toronto landmarks had been transformed for PANAMANIA, with new attractions and theming added to celebrate the arrival of the Pan Am flame and opening ceremonies. A view facing north across the square was centred on the TORONTO sign, which was intended to be a temporary installation to be taken down after the games’ conclusion.

A similar angle from 2021 shows that the TORONTO sign is a continued presence in the square, having been maintained and refurbished in response to overwhelming popularity, and replaced in September, 2020 with a permanent version. A maple leaf and medicine wheel now flank the letters of the LED installation. In the background, two prominent additions to the skyline are visible. Left of centre, the new Ontario Court of Justice Toronto is topped out at 17 storeys, while The Residences of 488 University Avenue can be seen at the far left, standing 55 storeys tall and completed in 2020.

We will return next week with another look at the changing face of Toronto. In the meantime, you can submit your own Throwback Thursday comparisons in our dedicated Forum thread for your chance to be featured in next week’s edition.
