Urban Capital Celebrates the (Near) Completion of River City | UrbanToronto
On Wednesday evening this week, Urban Capital set up a space below the eves of Harris Square, the fourth and final phase at their avant garde River City development in Toronto’s West Don Lands, inviting residents of phases one through four plus some members of the media to enjoy an evening of masked/distanced mingling, speeches, refreshments, and a short movie, on the occasion of the virtual completion of the exceptional development.

The evening kicked off with a welcome from Urban Capital Principal David Wex, who spoke about the firm’s vision for the River City development before he handed the mic to Meg Davis, Chief Development Officer at Waterfront Toronto who recalled the competitive bid process to select a developer that Waterfront Toronto could count on to deliver exceptional buildings on the tricky disused-industrial site along the banks of the Lower Don River.

The mic was then handed to Founder and Creative Director of Pureblink, Jose Uribe, an architect by trade, who was commissioned by Urban Capital to write and direct a film about the creation of the complex. Uribe introduced his film, Making River City, speaking about the process of filming and editing it together over several years.

The 20-minute film digs into all the major milestones in the creation of River City, with recollections by Wex and Davis, plenty of insight from Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte, Montreal-based design architects of the four River City buildings, and commentary by Toronto architectural luminaries Bruce Kuwabara and Brigitte Shim. Particularly heavy on imagery of the standout Phase Three, Making River City will give you inside knowledge of the work that goes into the creation of exceptional architecture and placemaking.
