Eight Cumberland Soon to Join Bloor-Yorkville Skyline | UrbanToronto
Another condo tower will soon make its presence known on Toronto’s ever-densifying Bloor-Yorkville skyline. After over two years of construction, Great Gulf and Phantom Developments’ Eight Cumberland project is now making steady progress into the air at Yonge and Cumberland. The new architects—Alliance-designed condo tower will likely hold a prominent place in the neighbourhood skyline by the end of the year, as it adds about a floor per week towards an eventual count of 51 storeys.

Construction began in early 2019 with the start of shoring work. Excavation started that May, and the pit had bottomed out five levels below grade by late that year. A tower crane was installed at the base of the pit in March, 2020, though COVID-19 shutdowns and restrictions hampered early forming progress. Below-grade levels took shape into Fall, 2020, when work reached the ground floor. We last checked in on the project this February when the building’s podium was gradually taking shape, partially hidden behind restored heritage buildings along its Yonge Street frontage.
Now over three months later, the podium levels are approaching structural completion, revealing some of the tower’s unique engineering in the process. Above the sixth floor, an extra-thick transfer slab has been formed, designed to redirect the structural load of the floor-plates’ cantilevered east edge down through the podium floor-plates below.

Above, the first signs of the seventh floor are now in place. This represents the first of what will be a series of largely repeating floor-plates, which will result in a shorter construction time for those floors as it moves towards a final height of 170 metres.

The completed development will introduce 371 new condominium units to one of Canada’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods, anchored to the street with 1,200 m² of retail space.
